WESTBURY town councillor, Sheila Kimmins, has paid tribute to local resident Dr Peter Biggs, following his recent death.
Peter was a founder member of the Westbury Group Practice Patients Participation Group, and he was well known man around the town including as a regular attender of Westbury Town Council meetings.
“The service that was held at Semington Crematorium on Wednesday 12th December had been written by Peter prior to his death,” said cllr Kimmins. “There was music which he liked, a poem by Roger McGough, ‘I am not Sleeping’, a passage from the Journal of Bruce Cumming, all of which were thought-provoking and amusing – and so very Peter.
“Peter was evacuated to Cornwall during World War II and upon returning to Kingston upon Thames he went to Tiffin School. He then left to attend the University of Southampton where he gained a doctorate. Throughout his working life he worked in education, as a teacher, an Ofsted inspector, and advising many organisations on educational matters.
“Having been a keen swimmer, he continued to swim most days. During his life he won many awards for his university and Hampshire county and was still swimming until the end of his life.
“As a radical, Peter could be seen at the majority of the Westbury Town Council meetings speaking as a resident and holding the council to task over many matters and for this he will be sadly missed – Peter was one of a kind.”
