Help make a difference in Dilton Marsh by joining the village’s Community Speed Watch team.
The small group ‘desperately’ needs more volunteers to continue their potentially life-saving work. Speed Watch teams monitor road traffic and use a speed indicator device to check how fast vehicles pass through the area.
Anyone who volunteers will receive training to use Speed Watch equipment and will be supplied with a high-vis jacket and badge. Volunteers only need to commit a couple of hours every few weeks.
Speed Watch teams are trained by Wiltshire Police to monitor traffic speeds and record the registration numbers of drivers who exceed the speed limit. All volunteers must comply with a code of practice.
Kathy Hutt, a member of the Speed Watch team, said, “We’re a small team, but it makes a big difference. People can use the village as a bit of a racetrack. There are dog walkers, bikes, and sometimes horse riders passing through, with parked cars on the streets. We just want to do what we can to help people think more about sharing the space. There’s never an excuse for speeding.”
Speed Watch teams work closely with Community Policing Teams in their area, and all recorded information is passed to Wiltshire Police for further action.
