Westbury town councillors will now be entitled to an annual allowance of £1,320 each to recognise the time and work involved in their duties.
Councillors agreed the new allowance policy at a Full Council meeting on Tuesday 5th May.
“This is a new step for the town council, so I think we’ll have to see how it pans out,” said Mayor Carole King. “I recognise that there are councillors who have to take leave from work, probably unpaid, for which this allowance would make up for lost personal revenue.”
Town and parish councils have discretion over whether to introduce allowances for elected members.
Councillors are not required to claim the allowance and can opt out individually if they choose not to receive it. Travel and subsistence allowances will be considered separately.
