The League of Friends committee have continued to meet regularly throughout 2013.
During the meetings they discuss any health related issues which the League could support, by donating money raised by the community, who always generously support such events.
Erica Watson, vice chair reported, “Since Westbury Hospital lost its beds and finally closed for good last year, fundraising has been more challenging as the hospital had been the main focus for so many years, but the League have still been able to donate to many good causes in the area.
“For nearly 20 years Westbury LOF provided the funding for a respite care bed at the Westbury Nursing Home and in the last 10 years we have donated in excess of £280,000 to this service which provided a much needed break for relatives caring for their loved ones at home.
“Sadly this year we reluctantly decided to stop this funding and focus on providing support to a wider age group. We are still donating to the Alzheimer’s Society and have given £116,000 over the last 10 years and plan to continue an annual donation.
“One of our committee members attended the Alzheimer’s AGM and was very impressed with the work they do in Wiltshire to support families affected by this cruel disease. It was interesting to hear that the service provided by the society in Wiltshire is using the very latest techniques in their approach to care.
“In recent years we have supported the First Responders, Relate, Carers Support, RUH, Forget Me Not Nursing Agency and the Whitehorse Health Centre.
“The LOF had a stall at the Lions Club Donkey Derby and recently held a very successful Bingo evening where money raised will be given to support Hope for Tomorrow, the mobile chemotherapy service which visits Westbury. We are also planning a quiz in the spring and will as usual take part in the Westbury Street Fair.
