Members of the Active Retirement Club of Westbury were able to enjoy a cruise-ship lecture without leaving town, when Felicity Herring gave her presentation “Fun and Games: Victorians at Large.”
Felicity is an art expert and used a gallery of paintings as evidence for what the Victorians liked to do with an increasing amount of leisure time. From the growth of tennis parties to the carnival atmosphere of the Epsom Derby and the annual migration to Scotland for the shooting and fishing, Hilary’s lively lecture shed interesting light on Victorian England.
ARC’s next meeting will be held at the URC Hall at 10.30am on Tuesday 30 October when Ann King will be reminding us of the days before email in her presentation “Poste Haste.”
