Cake design academy plans move to Westbury

A NEW luxury cake design academy is planning to open in Westbury early next year, providing a place for both beginners and advanced cake makers to take part in classes and workshops.

Kate Parsons, former owner and chief cake creator at DayDreams UK, has plans to open her own cake design academy, choosing Westbury as its base.

if Wiltshire Council grant planning permission, Kate hopes to open ‘The Sugar Lair’ at 9-10 Westbury Mall, Edward Street, as part of the historic Angel Mill building,  with a prospective grand opening for Wednesday 16th January 2019.

The academy will provide cake decorating courses for beginners to the advanced, for adults and children, to cover a variety of techniques.

Guest artists from around the world will be hosting workshops, including some of the world’s biggest cake decorating artists looking to bring international skills and different techniques to the United Kingdom, with many visiting the country for the first time.

One of the artists is popular French cake artist, Javier from Luma’s Cakes, who will be hosting three workshops in March 2019 to teach people how to create cakes such as Tinkerbell and Ariel, for all those Disney-lovers.

Once Kate announced Javier’s planned workshop,  she had over 40 emails overnight of people interested, including a woman  from Guatemala who wants to fly to the UK to take part in the workshop.

For the launch, Kate is inviting people from the top three cake magazines in the UK and  a special commemorative cake will be made by professional ‘extreme’ cake makers.

Kate said, “The response from the cake community has been absolutely amazing and they are hugely excited.

“This year has been a whirlwind, absolutely life-changing. I fell in love instantly with the property in Westbury. The Angel Mill is just beautiful, everything I wanted.

“The history and the character is something I hope to bring to the interior, a reinvented look but in keeping with the history, I also just love the area.

“I think it will be a fantastic addition to Westbury and will definitely put Westbury on the international cake industry map and bring a whole host of international guests to the town.”

To register your interest in workshops, you can contact Kate via the-sugar-lair@outlook.com or to find out what’s next, like her page on Facebook by searching ‘The Sugar Lair’.
