FOLLOWING the success of its open days in June, Barters Nursery in Chapmanslade is repeating the exercise for the autumn.
Not many people are aware that Barters has a wholesale nursery hidden behind it that supplies the centre with most of its plants.
In an effort to make both parts of their business known, owners Diana and Legh Walker continue to invite the public to see behind the scenes at this specialist nursery, meet the growers and pick up a bargain.
The two open days will be on Saturday 26th September and Saturday 3rd October from 10am until 5pm on each day. There will also be refreshments available which all the proceeds will go to either MacMillan Cancer Support or the local Corsley Memorial Playing Field.
Diana said, “At our open days, members of the public are able to scour the trade nursery and pick out their own plants at trade prices, something that has never happened before in the nursery’s 50-year history.
“The summer open day was a resounding success. After the first day which was sunny, people were undaunted by rain on the second day as they came out in droves in their hunt for a bargain.
“Some customers were like children in a sweet shop not knowing where to turn next when they saw the range of varieties, as well as the sheer numbers available.”
This autumn, Barters is once again opening its doors and those who go along will find there is even more choice.
Legh said, “Production has increased by a third on 2014 and there are over 60,000 plants made up of over 500 different lines available. They include perennials, shrubs, ground cover plants, climbers and specimen plants. There should be something for everyone.
“It may not have been a great summer for sun-bathing and barbecues, but it’s been very good for growing and the plants look fabulous.
“Staff from both sides of the business will be on hand to offer advice, fetch a trolley or help you find what you’re looking for. And the autumn is a great time to plant, as plants settle in over the winter ready to romp away in the spring and they need a lot less watering and care.”
Hundreds of pounds were raised last year for good causes. So why not come along but don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes or wellington boots and possibly an umbrella!
