A CHAPMANSLADE professor has been awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the New Year Honours 2014.
Professor Nigel Brown, a molecular microbiologist, has been recognised by the Queen for services to science.
His career in science covers ‘a full working lifetime,’ including working as a research scientist for 40 years.
Nigel said, “It’s surprising, delightful, and – bearing in mind some of the comments I’ve received from friends and colleagues – humbling. You do things with teams of people and the credit belongs with them as much as me.
“It’s not awarded for my research and training as such, I think it’s more for the fact I’ve served on national and internationl committees to promote science and ensure it is properly funded.”
Nigel’s roles also include an active interest in science policy.
He is president for the Society for General Microbiology and Emeritus Professor of Molecular Microbiology, University of Edinburgh.
