Westbury Methodist Church was full to capacity on December 18th for Westbury and District Choral Society’s Christmas Concert.
At over 100 this was the largest audience for very many years and an indication of the choir’s growing reputation.
Conducted by Luke Pickett and accompanied on organ and piano by Rob Danter the choir sang a wide variety of Christmas choral music. There were also congregational carols (‘Lo He comes with Clouds Descending’ with a brass introduction by Luke and his wife Helen was particularly impressive) together with an organ solo and seasonal readings.
The following day members supported the annual Carol Festival at Imber and had also recently sung at the Carol Service at West Wilts’ crematorium and entertained residents and friends at Watersmead Care Home.
Immediately after the Christmas break the choir will begin to prepare for its Spring Concert in April when the main works will be the Vivaldi Gloria and Rutter’s popular Requiem plus a number of shorter pieces.
The choir meets on Wednesday evenings at Westbury Methodist Church from 7.30 until 9.30. New members are always welcome in all sections but especially Tenors and Basses. No audition is required.
On Saturday January 16th a workshop, open to all, will be held at the Methodist Church. Those present will be led through the main choral sections of the Rutter before giving an informal performance. Registration £5 (students £3; hire of score £2) is at 1.30pm for a 2pm start.
