Westbury beaten on the road as winning run halted

A thriller at Meadow Lane where Westbury overturned a 0-2 deficit to make it three league wins in a week and four consecutive wins in all competitions!

The first half an hour was quite cagey and scrappy with the respective defences working hard to prevent opportunities, however Joel Manning in the home goal saved well from Jacob Bowker and his opposite number Dan Holman made a low save to deny Bevan Cross.

The hosts got lucky when Brad Williams saw his header rebound off the crossbar straight to Manning! Ryan Bole played the ball to Cross who jinked into the box and played in a dangerous delivery that was cut out in the 6-yard box.

Tavistock scored their first on 43 minutes when Tom Chastey fired in an impressive strike. Then they almost doubled their lead but Manning turned away Jack Crago’s attempt.

United started the       second-half much better and Josh Jenkins had a free kick saved by Holman then another fine ball by Cross set up Brad Selwood for a diving header that went just wide!

The visitors made it 0-2 in fine style on 51 when Rhyss Lindsell’s cross was met by Bowker’s first-time strike at the far post!

Westbury made an attacking double substitution and turned the match on its head in a thrilling 10 minutes! Selwood hit the post on 53 with a 20 yarder moments before a Bole corner was headed over the line by Josh Jenkins with the assistant informing the referee that it had gone in.

Another Bole set piece led to the equaliser five minutes later when Ben Starr latched onto the ball and scored a screamer into the top corner!

It was all Westbury now and, after Selwood had an effort blocked, the next attack on 64 saw him net what turned out to be the winning goal after Jenkins had run full pelt to retrieve a ball that looked like going out of play!

Cross continued to create crossing opportunities which were dealt with by The Lambs back line.

In the closing stages Ryan White had a shot well held by Manning who then did well to save a Crago header.

With Tavistock committing players into attack in search of a leveller, United had several counter attacks. At the end of one move Ali Sen’s clever effort clipped the crossbar and with time running out he had two further shots, the first of which was deflected inches wide and the second flew over the bar!

*Star man: Josh Jenkins. Team: Joel Manning, Ryan Bole, Ethan Cannings, Aaron Cockerill, Dan Restorick, Jack Witcombe, CJ Stewart, Brad Selwood, Bevan Cross, Jamie Jordan, Josh Jenkins. Subs: Steve Hulbert, Sam Francis, Aaron Witchell, Ben Starr, Ali Sen (all used).
