WESTBURY’S Cancer Research UK fundraising group is in need of new committee members to help organise events for the charity.
The group’s biggest annual fundraiser, The Big Breakfast, will not be held this year for the first time since it started in 1999. Organisers hope it will continue next year, but need more volunteers to help run the group.
Group chair Sheila Carruthers said, “The Westbury branch continues not only to raise funds but to enjoy the friendship of those on our committee, of our wonderful volunteers and the people of Westbury and surrounding villages.
“To date I have had a viable working committee but three of our members, for one reason and another, feel they cannot continue after the AGM in April.
“It is vital that we try to recruit new members to join the committee.”
The group donated almost £19,000 to the charity in 2016-17, around £15,000 of which came through memorial donations.
The Big Breakfast raises around £1,000 each year.
Sheila added, “We thank the Labour Club and our many friends and supporters for having made the breakfast so successful since 1999. Hopefully we will be back in 2018.
“Since 2010 in Westbury we have raised, with the town’s support and generosity, over £38,000. This has gone to Cancer Research UK to help in its vital work in prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment of those with cancer.”
