Westbury Town Council is looking to install planters on Westbury Cemetery grounds to address ongoing parking problems.
The issue was discussed at a recent Highways, Planning and Development meeting, where councillors heard that, following measures to prevent parking on Bratton Road, the problem has shifted to Westbury Cemetery, where residents have been parking on cemetery land and outside the gates. It was reported that some cars have also been left overnight when the gates are locked.
Councillor Mike Sutton, chair of the Management of Services Committee, said, “We’ve been talking about the great success of the yellow lines outside along Bratton Road, it’s prevented all the parking on the grass, that’s been a great success.
“But they’ve started parking their vehicles sometimes inside the cemetery when it’s open, and on the pavement by the gates outside.
“The reason we’re bringing it here is that Management of Services can’t do anything about putting planters down or obstructions because it’s Wiltshire Highways’ land.
“We either put yellow lines there, so there is no parking on the pavement, or to grant dispensation to put planters there, but they have to give us the authority because we can’t do it because it is their land.”
Councillor Phillip Harcourt suggested clamping the cars parked illegally; however, Cllr Sutton raised concerns about the potential cost.
The committee agreed that they would like to place planters in the area to prevent the parking issues, and would forward the proposal to the Local Highways and Footpaths Improvement Group (LHFIG) for discussion and advice.
