WESTBURY and District Cricket Club’s volunteer groundsmen, Daniel Gill and Rich Oakley, have been officially recognised as the Volunteer Grounds Management Team of the Year in the Wiltshire Cricket Grassroots Awards.
The duo received their award at an awards evening in Devizes Town Hall, held to recognise those volunteers who are making a real difference at clubs and those who are working hard and improving the places where the game is played.
A spokesperson for the Westbury club said, “Following the cricket club purchasing the machinery and taking in house the maintenance of the cricket square and ground during Covid, I am delighted that Daniel Gill and Rich Oakley have been awarded volunteer grounds management team of the year.
“The boys, who are the youngest in the business, have worked tirelessly to prepare outstanding wickets (voted by peers as one of the best in the county) often for junior, ladies’ and men’s games five nights a week plus weekends. The award is much deserved. Without them, cricket wouldn’t have been able to be played last season.
“With the club working with the local community to ensure cricket continues to be played at Leighton, this is a most welcome boost towards this aim. This is a fantastic achievement for the club, and it shows just how far the club is moving forward in difficult times.”
At the award evening, the club also received a Clubmark accreditation from the English Cricket Board which shows that the club is sustainable, well run and provides the right environment for its members. Clubmark accreditation also means your club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages, as well as assuring parents and carers that they are choosing the right option for their young people.
