Employees gather to say farewell to Cement Works

OVER 200 former employees of Westbury Cement Works came together last month to say an emotional farewell to the works before it is demolished. 

Former employee Gary Bradbeer and current employee Trevor Adams wanted to organise a get-  together for all those who have been associated with Westbury Cement Works since it opened in 1962.

Gary said, “We decided it would be good to get as many former employees as possible to celebrate and say farewell to the works in its final weeks and months.

“More than 200 attended the event, far exceeding our expectations. Attendees included colleagues that had worked at the site from its opening in 1962, right up to the present day. It was great to see them enjoying the evening and sharing memories, stories and photos. Myself and Trevor Adams were amazed at the turn out, and by 5.30pm we found ourselves having to ask if the main hall could be opened up to create more space.

“Operational years of the factory were projected by laser onto the chimney during the evening and a video that is in the process of being made was shown throughout the evening. It shows the plant throughout its life, from construction to demolition. A very well received barbecue was provided during the evening, and was kindly paid for by CRH Tarmac.

“Former employee and Trowbridge Town Crier, Trevor Heeks, was present during the evening and came in especially handy when a little bit of order was required for the group photo.

“We would like to thank the following for their contribution in making the evening such a success;  White Horse Country Park, Arthur W Mays Funeral Directors, Skynamite Aerial Video and Photography, Aztec Dynamic Laser Productions and CRH Tarmac.

“The event was so successful that we are looking at possibly arranging  another event for a few years’ time.”
