A YOUNG member of the West Wiltshire Youth Sailing Association will attempt a ‘virtual mountain climb’ later this month to raise money for the new WWYSA clubhouse.
10-year old Evie Platt, who has been learning to sail at the club for two years, will ascend Cley Hill near her home in Frome a number of times to equal the height of some of the tallest mountains in the UK.
Evie has set herself the target of scaling Cley Hill 18 times, equalling the height of the tallest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis – 1,345 metres.
“Cley Hill is 244 metres tall (above sea level) and we think it’s about a 75 metre climb from the stile at the end of the track to the top,” explains Evie. “On Saturday 27th April, I’m going to make repeated ascents of Cley Hill with a target of climbing the equivalent of the highest mountain in the UK!
“Please sponsor me whatever you can afford as our club is great fun and gives lots of young people like me a chance to try a sport that most people who live inland normally can’t access. Last year I qualified for my RYA Dinghy Level 2 and will be going for Level 3 this year.”
The sailing club recently relocated to a new site on Westbury’s sailing lake on Station Road to make way for up to 300 new homes being built by developers Linden Homes. The developers have provided the club with a concrete base to build a new clubhouse, but the club now need to raise money to fund the project.
