Work has started on the state-of-the-art multi-use games area (MUGA) and an outdoor gym at Grassacres Park.
The £140,000 scheme will provide an enclosed all-weather surface for a variety of sports along with a range of fitness equipment.
Construction started last Monday, 16th September, and is due to be completed by early November.
“It will be a fantastic asset for the town and we’re delighted that work has started,” said Mayor Jane Russ.
“This is a significant investment in our community’s health and well-being. Grassacres Park has always been a popular green space right in the centre of our town, and this development will significantly enhance the facilities there.”
The MUGA will include space for informal ball sports and activities including a basketball court with hoops, a mini football pitch with two goals, two toddler pitches and toddler goals, cricket stumps, a target practice area and an external hoop so people can still shoot hoops if the court is busy.
The gym equipment will be in a separate area and will include a street workout area and equipment with various resistance settings to cater for people of different abilities and fitness levels.
Both the MUGA and gym will be on hard-wearing, all-weather surface that can be used all year round with a paved access path.
“The feedback from the local community has been fantastic; it’s something Westbury very much needs,” said David Krzyzosiak, Westbury Town Council’s community ranger. “There’s not a basketball hoop in Westbury and there weren’t any football goals until we put them in Penleigh last year.
“The council identified a lack of sports and play facilities in Westbury and we’re doing as much as we can to enhance them and this project will help deliver these improved services.
“We’re hoping the project will provide local residents with a chance to enjoy the outdoors and have a positive long-term impact on their health and well-being.
“It’s an eight-to-ten-week project so we’re hoping it will be finished by early November and so far, work has gone really well. Now are just looking forward to seeing the work completed.”
The town council added, “Please bear with us whilst the works take place. During busy times the play area may be closed for safety purposes.”
