Edington Arts’ choral workshops, held in Edington Priory Church every year, are a popular draw for singers throughout the region and beyond.
This year, the fifth workshop will be held on Saturday 18th May from 9.30am – 4.30pm, under the leadership of Paul Brough.
Paul is one of the UK’s leading choral directors and conductors. He was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2007 in recognition of a significant contribution to the music profession; these include conducting over 60 broadcasts of choral music all over the world, holding the position of Principal Guest Conductor to the BBC Singers until 2016, and, as a Professor at the Royal Academy since 2004, teaching orchestral and choral conducting and academic studies. He is also well known to the Edington Music Festival as both a member of the Schola, occasional conductor of the Consort, and humourist.
Singers will be working on four motets. These are stand-alone short, unaccompanied pieces written for four or more parts. The earliest is the 16th century ‘Ave Maria’ by Robert Parsons, which traditionally brings the Edington Music Festival to a close, followed by two pieces by Henry Purcell, (‘I was glad’ and ‘Thou knowest Lord’) and ending with the ‘Ave Maria’ by Anton Bruckner. Rehearsal accompaniment will be provided by Chris Totney.
Singers of all abilities and experience are welcome – the only requirements are enthusiasm and an ability to read music! The day costs £20 plus £2 for music hire, and forms are available from www.edingtonarts.org or by phoning Anne on 01380 831425.
Edington Arts invites any non-singers who are interested to come to the Priory Church in time for tea at 4pm (donations welcome), and to stay on to listen to the results of the choir’s hard work – no tickets needed.
