Westbury entertained Bear Flat in the latest game in the Westbury Cricket Group stage hoping to start with a win after the washout at Bradford on Avon last week.
Westbury gave a club league debut to James Clack who had joined the club prior to the lockdown.
Westbury under the captaincy of Ben Whiting won the toss and decided to field first. Bear Flat opened with Brendon Bester and Mark Gunning and they made a flying start by putting on 88 before they lost their first wicket when Gunning was out leg before off the bowling of Dan Gill for 29.
Ross Newman, the Bear Flat captain, then came out to join Bester at the wicket. When the total reached 127 Westbury took their second wicket with Bester out for 52 caught by Grant Savides off the bowling of Dan Gill.
Bear Flat then lost a further 4 wickets, with the regular opening bowlers Carroll and Oakley taking the wickets, leaving their total at 163. At the end of their allotted 40 overs Bear Flat had accumulated 177 for 6 wickets.
Andy Carroll (2-16 off 8 overs) had the best figures ably supported by Richard Oakley (2-27 off 8 overs) and Dan Gill (2-36).
When Westbury batted they made a blistering start by putting on 39 runs before the Bear Flat bowlers struck by having Clack leg before by the Bear Flat spinner Malhotra for 5.
When the score reached 77 the Westbury captain Whiting was caught out in the deep for a 64 off 51 balls. Then Westbury lost 4 further wickets for 65 runs and it was left to Richard Mills on his first appearance of the season (45*) and Clark Evans (6*) to lead them to a 4 wicket win.
This week’s game is away to Hinton Charterhouse (Saturday 8th August) and support is always welcome and hopefully the team will continue their winning run.
