The future of a long-debated Westbury bypass remains uncertain, after Wiltshire Council has not confirmed whether it is being seriously considered as part of ongoing transport plans.
The lack of commitment comes after a recent letter from the Department for Transport (DfT) to Westbury’s MP, Andrew Murrison, made clear that it is for Wiltshire Council to bring forward any bypass proposals.
In the letter, Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander said, “I appreciate the subject of a potential bypass for Westbury has been ongoing for many years, and I recognise the concerns of your constituents caused by the movements of HGV traffic on the roads through the town and in the surrounding areas.”
The letter confirmed that Wiltshire Council must take the lead in bringing forward any proposals for a bypass and seek funding from the government when future funding opportunities arise.
The letter also stated, “However, I must stress that during a time of considerable financial challenge, this Government has had to take some difficult decisions concerning former and existing major road projects.”
Westbury remains the only town along the A350 without a bypass, meaning heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) still pass directly through the town centre. Residents have long complained that this worsens congestion, damages road surfaces and contributes to poor air quality.
The Department for Transport’s recent south coast to M4 strategic study confirmed the A350 through Westbury as the preferred route between the M4 and the south coast.
Council officials are expected to meet with the DfT in September. However, despite being asked directly, the council has not confirmed whether a bypass is being actively considered or if funding options are being explored. It has only said that “options for Westbury will also be considered” as part of a wider assessment of the A350 corridor.
Cllr Ian Thorn, leader of Wiltshire Council, said, “Wiltshire Council is actively collaborating with National Highways to develop a comprehensive delivery plan in response to the recommendations outlined in the M4 to Dorset Coast Strategic Study.
“A key priority identified in the study is the need for a detailed assessment of the A350 corridor between West Ashton and the A36. This work is at an early stage, but the assessment will focus on addressing the longstanding transport and infrastructure challenges at Yarnbrook and Westbury, with the aim of improving connectivity, safety and resilience along this vital route.”
