A WESTBURY strongman has continued his run of success by winning his bench press competition at the BodyPower Expo in Birmingham last month.
Powerlifter Matt Doughty, who has won numerous gold medals in the past 18 months and broken a national bench press record, competed in the men’s 125kg M1 Masters Class at the fitness convention in May.
He won the class, managing to press 190kg, and topped the day off by meeting some of his strongman heroes, Iceland’s world strongman Benedikt Magnusson, four-time world’s strongest man Zydrunas Savickas and three-time world’s strongest man Bill Kazmaier.
Matt said, “I’m chuffed to have won and was happy with my performance on the day, but my real focus is on the Euro and the World championships later this year.
“I almost forgot I was there to lift because I spent so much time walking around meeting my idols!
“The next competition for me is the European powerlifting championships in June where I will be hoping to get the elusive 200kg bench press, which I have just missed in my last few competitions.”
Matt’s success comes off the back of gold medals at championships in January and April, when he also broke the British bench press record for his weight class.
