Mapping the history of Westbury is the plan behind a new project to be launched this month by the town’s heritage society.
Heritage Society chairman, Keith Miller, wants local people to pool their knowledge about historic buildings in the town to help preserve and map the town’s heritage.
Everyone is invited to attend the society’s next meeting on Tuesday 28th March to hear all about the project, share their knowledge and help mark up maps of the community with buildings of historical or community importance.
The project has been triggered following the sad demise of the historic Oak Inn which was unfortunately not listed and was demolished to make way for the Aldi car park.
“We really want to ensure that we have a comprehensive list of all buildings that contribute to the history of our town,” Keith explained. “What happened to the Oak was so very unfortunate and could have been avoided. We need to work together to preserve our town’s heritage.”
The meeting on Tuesday 28th March will take place at the Methodist Church foyer on Station Road and starts at 7.30pm.
The Westbury Heritage Society runs the visitor centre in the High Street where a host of local history documents, photographs and artefacts can be seen.
