Hilly Helmet

More than 100 runners donned their most creative headgear and took to the lanes around Westbury last week for the ninth annual Hilly Helmet Challenge, raising just over £4,000 for Brain Tumour Support. 

In total, the event has now brought in almost £40,000 for the charity since it began.

Organised by Robin-Mark Schols of Dilton Marsh, the unique 4.5-mile event is inspired by his own recovery from brain surgery. After undergoing an operation that left him without part of his skull, Robin was required to wear a safety helmet wherever he went, including on his regular runs. That experience became the heart of the challenge: raising awareness and funds, all while encouraging runners to wear whatever helmet or hat they choose.

Almost 120 signed up for this year’s event, dubbed ‘The 9 Lives of Hilly Helmet’, with just over 100 running on the night, sporting an array of fun and imaginative headgear including aeroplanes, Doctor Who’s K9, balloon animals, crowns, cuddly toys, top hats and even a beehive.

Top honours went to Ed Knudsen of Avon Valley Runners, who claimed his fourth win at the event, while Esther Frawley of Team Bath was the first female to cross the finish line. The coveted Best Helmet award was won by Sue Mackie of Corsham Running Club.

Robin said, “I believe it’s a true community event and I’m really proud to have had such success with it, especially as it’s based on an experience that was a tough one for me.

“It’s nice to run the event in Westbury and have the cricket club support us by opening the bar and providing a barbecue. The White Horse Pottery create our prizes every year and we’re able to use the Leighton facility, which is fantastic.

“It’s great to have the backing of the local running groups too – Warminster Running Club and Westbury Running Group both cancelled club sessions to encourage members to join us.

“We’ve had people come from all over, including one guy this year who travelled from Bridgend just to take part – amazing!

“I’m hoping to do something special for the 10th edition next year – watch this space for Hilly Helmet 10!”
