WILTSHIRE Short Mat Bowling Association is keen to raise awareness of their sport and encourage people to join their local short mat bowls team.
Ricky Pyle, secretary of Wiltshire Short Mat Bowling Association said, “You may have seen the Indoor Bowls World Championships on TV over the last few days, but did you know there are 29 short mat bowls clubs across Wiltshire, and chances are there is one near you? With almost 500 registered players in the county, short mat bowls is a popular and social sport for any age, ability or budget, often played in village halls.
“Wiltshire has a long and proud tradition within the sport, and currently boasts an England international amongst our membership, but we’re continuously looking for new players. So if you fancy finding out more about the sport, or would like information about a club near you, please visit http:// wsmba9. wixsite. com/wsmba or email wiltshire@esmba.co.uk
Westbury is home to the Whitehorse Shortmat Bowls club.
The club was formed in September 2013 and currently has a team in the Wiltshire winter league and another in the summer league. They have also entered several county competitions each year and local tournaments with some success. They hold their own annual tournament in February each year.
The practice night is Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at The White Horse Country Park. Visitors and new members are welcome.
For further details on their bowls club, please contact the secretary Karen Kirby by emailing karen. kirby@ blueyonder.co.uk. There are also clubs in Bratton, Heywood and Hawkeridge and Chapmanslade.
Wiltshire Short Mat Bowling Association currently has a vacancy open for a new county team manager. Previous bowls experience is preferred, but not essential, as the successful candidate will be supported by a small team of vastly experienced selectors. The ability to lead and motivate a group of individuals is essential, and previous sports management experience would be an advantage.
Interested candidates are asked to apply via email to wiltshire@esmba.co.uk no later than Friday 23rd February. ”
