A LOCAL choir is paying tribute to an American musical icon this month as Richard Carpenter, from Carpenters fame, turns 80.
The Westbury branch of One Voice Community Choir is presenting a ‘Special Birthday Tribute to Richard Carpenter’ at the Peace Memorial Hall, North Bradley, on Saturday 17th October at 7pm.
“Richard began his career in the mid 1960s with various bands, including a jazz outfit, but found fame with his sister Karen in 1969, when they were signed to A&M Records as the Carpenters,” said choir leader Lee Ingram.
“A string of hits followed throughout the 1970s and early 80s, with Richard later producing solo records and working tirelessly to curate and continue to promote the Carpenters product. ‘Carpenters with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’ was released in 2018 and ‘Christmas Once More’ in 2024, proving there’s still a demand for the duo’s sound, almost 60 years on.
Tickets are £10 to include refreshments, available from Lee on 07766 244321.
