A WOMAN from Dilton Marsh has been presented with the Alan Nabarro Medal which recognises those who have lived with diabetes for 50 years.
Julie Higgins was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was just four years old and since then, has injected herself with insulin up to six times a day.
Julie was presented with the award at Warminster Community Hospital by Dr Mimi Chen, a diabetes consultant from the RUH.
Julie said, “It was lovely to receive the award, especially with my family there and the diabetes specialists who have helped me along the way.
“There has been lots of challenges but better healthcare and medical advances have made it easier to live with.”
Diabetes specialist Lesley Amer said, “I would like to say a huge congratulations to Julie who always gets on with it and never moans.”
Alan Nabarro waged a lifelong battle against discrimination against people with diabetes. In 1968 he was awarded the OBE for his work with young people in London.
