HOW should Westbury commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War, in 2014?
Town councillor David Jenkins suggests the town council should create a working group of four members to consider how Westbury can best mark the anniversary of World War I.
The working party would work in partnership with other organisations and co-opt suitably qualified individuals as necessary.
Cllr Jenkins says that a past visit to the war cemeteries on the battlefields is one factor that led him to consider the 100th anniversary commemorations.
Cllr Jenkins said, “I went to Flanders some years ago, and was really taken aback – it made an indelible impression on me, seeing all those sites. All those graves and cemeteries stay in your mind.”
The Remembrance Sunday parade and service in Westbury is always well supported, and cllr Jenkins is sure that the people of Westbury will also appreciate their own commemorations for the anniversary.
He adds, “In addition to the things that will be organised by Wiltshire Council, I thought it would be good for the people of Westbury if the town did something itself.”
