‘Minimal damage’ caused by St George’s cross on White Horse

Westbury’s White Horse has sustained ‘minimal damage’ after a St George’s cross was attached to the landmark using red fabric.

The red cross was secured with pegs on Tuesday 9th September and removed the same day. English Heritage, which maintains the landmark, assessed the site and confirmed only minor damage.

The incident divided opinion, with some residents expressing concern online about vandalism, while others saw it as a display of patriotism.

A spokesperson for English Heritage said, “The red fabric attached to the Westbury White Horse was removed and the site assessed. The pegs were installed within joints, but fortunately they caused minimal damage.”

The incident follows a wider national trend of St George’s and Union Flags appearing in public places, and sometimes being painted onto buildings and roads across the country.
