THE new mayor of Westbury is cllr Jane Russ who will be supported in the role by the new deputy mayor, cllr Mark Bailey.
They were elected at a meeting of Westbury Town Council at the start of the month.
In her acceptance speech, cllr Russ thanked her predecessor, cllr Mike Sutton, for his stewardship of the town and his work throughout the past year as mayor and said she looked forward to the year ahead.
“Mike Sutton, what a legend!” she said. “He led us for two years during Covid and after taking time out to catch his breath, covered by the admirable cllr Sheila Kimmins, he’s just finished his third term. He always has his finger on the pulse of the town while supporting his fellow councillors, the clerk and our wonderful team of officers.
“His quiet, thorough approach, along with his knowledge of the council have made him a useful resource for us all. His stewardship of the first climate emergency subcommittee has laid out a map for us to follow and his wise counsel and unwavering commitment to the Neighbourhood Plan are just two areas of excellence in a full council career. Thank you, cllr Sutton.”
The mayoral duties include being chair of the town council, attending civic events, raising the profile of the local community and the town council and promoting public involvement in the town council’s activities.
