A new orchard has been planted in Grassacres Park as a tribute to the King’s Coronation, with Westbury Town Council leading the project to enhance the park’s beauty and biodiversity.
The orchard features a mix of fruit and blossom trees, including plum, cherry, medlar, and mulberry. As the trees mature, they will provide fresh fruit for the community while promoting sustainable produce sourcing.
The saplings were planted by the town’s dedicated tree wardens, who volunteered their time to improve the park. They will be back later this year for a similar project at Penleigh Park, where an orchard will be created to showcase traditional West Country apple varieties.
Westbury Town Council’s lead ranger, David, praised the volunteers, saying, “It was a great day planting with the tree wardens, and I would like to thank them for their time and effort in enhancing the tree value and appearance of Grassacres Park.
“This is just one of the orchards the town council plans to plant this year, with another set to be established in Penleigh Park.”
The initiative aims to not only improve the park’s landscape but also foster a deeper appreciation for nature within the Westbury community. The project was funded by Wiltshire’s Coronation Living Heritage Fund.
