WESTBURY Rotary was asked to support the Countryville event at Heywood House on Saturday 5th August, which was raising money in aid of the Westbury Youth Club, and the club was asked to run the games field as part of the festival.
It was a dark and damp morning when the Westbury Rotarians, plus other non-Rotary helpers, donned their wellington boots, the obligatory hi vis jackets and waterproofs and enduring good humour, they shouldered their essential items including one large gazebo, several garden chairs, the games and the Rotary banner which rippled magnificently in the breeze.
The Rotarians set to and assembled the equipment for the impending games in very quick time and then the game was on! The free games proved a great success and after a slow start the word got about amongst the children that there were enough free goes to win a Countryville sticker and very often a dip into the basket of chocolate treats.
The games included splat the rat, wanging the wellie, horseshoe tossing, and the tabletop game bagatelle. These were all great hits with the limbo dancing attracting none but the bravest of competitors!
The entertainment was headlined by the famous Wurzels who performed their best hits to a very appreciative crowd, most of whom were probably too young to remember them first time around.
