Highways England has agreed that double white lines are to be installed on the section of the A36 trunk road at Black Dog Hill in Chapmanslade in 2018.
Black Dog Hill is a notorious accident black spot where numerous serious accidents have occurred in recent years. A local man was killed in an accident that took place in September.
In a letter to Andrew Murrison, MP, Nick Harris, operations executive director for Highways England said, “The current layout and white lines along this section of road are compliant with current design standards, which take into account the local topography and road users’ visibility. Our recent Route Safety Strategy was completed earlier this year. This identified a number of areas, including Black Dog Hill, where the installation of double white lines may prove beneficial. As a result of this we are seeking to include this work in our programme for the next year.”
Local residents, who have long campaigned for measures to improve road safety on this section of road, look forward to the promised work being completed in the coming months, describing it as good news for motorists. Excessive speeds are seen as a major factor in the traffic accidents that occur and there is hope that a 50 mph speed limit might be introduced in due course.
