PUPILS from primary schools across the Westbury area swapped the classroom for the pitch last week at a TAG rugby festival at Westbury RFC.
The inter-school rugby event was held by Westbury RFC Juniors coaches at the rugby club on Knott Field. Pupils took part in skills and fitness drills and played in matches against one another.
The children were then presented with medals from special guests from Bath Rugby’s Academy team.
Organiser and youth coach Julian Phelps said, “It was a brilliant day and the kids really enjoyed it. For some of them it was their first introduction to rugby so we were pleased to be able to offer that. It’s a good way for us to get more children involved with the sport and our club; we hope some of them will join us at our weekend sessions.

“We’d like to thank Bratton, Dilton Marsh, West Ashton, Chapmanslade and Westbury Junior schools for supporting the event and providing the players with a fun day out.
“We would also like to thank our coach referees and volunteers – many of whom took time off work to help out with the event.”
The event was sponsored by Wiltshire Mortgages and Martin & Co, both based in Westbury. Sponsors Ricia Gibbs and Luke Hames went along to the event to present the children with participation medals, alongside Bath Rugby Academy players Levi Douglas, Adam Hastings and Darren Atkins.
Westbury RFC Juniors have teams of different age groups from u6s through to u12s and play on Sunday mornings from 10am to 11.30am at Knott Field, White Horse Country Park.
