Westbury finally played at home in 2018, but failed to take advantage of Keynsham and Roman Glass’ inactivity as Wincanton took a deserved point from Meadow Lane.
Both sides struggled to get going on the tacky surface and it was United who settled first, with chances for Steve Hulbert (header) and Mark Robinson (low shot) missing the target.
Home keeper Lewis Porter made a great save to palm away Jack Burnett’s header from Dan Wise’s free kick, before United struck first, when Jake Hiscocks’ set piece was headed in by Matt Jones on 21 minutes.
The visitors had a good spell and it took excellent defensive work by Jones, Dan Jordan and Dan Price to keep them at bay.
Westbury drove forward towards half time and really should have doubled their lead, but Robinson was firstly denied by Liam Norris, then had his rebound blocked.
The second half got off to a thrilling start. Jordan Pinder, on as substitute for Jones, committed a foul just outside the penalty area and Wise equalised with a cleverly struck free kick.
Westbury regained the lead immediately when Leon Greenland got a touch to divert Jamie Jordan’s effort into the net! However Wincanton were adamant Greenland was offside and the referee consulted with his assistant before giving the goal.
Wincanton put United under massive pressure and in a rare instance this season, the home defence looked rattled! Connor Williams was twice denied by Porter, then Pinder blocked Gary Chapman’s 25 yarder.
It was Chapman who scored their second equaliser on 77 when he ran in unmarked, to head past Porter to make it 2-2.
Both sides nearly snatched a winner in the closing stages but Town’s finishing was wayward, particularly Matt Garner who wasted a great chance!
Westbury thought they had won it in stoppage time but Josh Ferguson’s strike from Ricky Hulbert’s pass was disallowed for offside!
