United crashed out of the Les Phillips cup at the first round stage to a much-improved Odd Down side compared to the recent league meeting.
The hosts started brightly and looked to be in control of the game until the 22nd minute, when Odd Down scored from virtually their first attack. A header was flicked on into the path of an OddDown striker who superbly volleyed home from the edge of the box.
From that moment on, nothing went right for the hosts and the visitors sensed this was to be their night and weren’t going to lay down quietly. They were adept at breaking up play and the referee was easily influenced by their constant claims for fouls whenever there was any contact at all and the home side became more and more frustrated, which was compounded when Odd Down doubled their lead as Brandon Sawyer misjudged a corner which then hit Will Stead on the line and went in.
That was effectively game over and the evening got worse for United as Odd Down scored a third from the spot after Jamie Jordan was adjudged to have fouled an opponent and then skipper Steve Hulbert was shown a red card for violent conduct.
All in all, a very bad night at the office but credit to Odd Down who deserved their victory and progression into the draw for the next round of the League cup.
