Westbury took full advantage of the Radstock Town v Keynsham Town match being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, to overtake Keynsham and regain the top spot in the Toolstation League Division One.
It wasn’t the best of starts when after only 6 minutes Welton Rovers’ centre midfielder Joe Batterick tried to play a through ball which deflected back to him off the Westbury defence. From about 45 yards out he chose to this time send the ball goalward, and managed to lob it over the unlucky Lewis Porter and make it one-nil to Welton.
It didn’t take Westbury long to draw level; from the kick off Westbury stormed forward and won a free-kick on the left-hand edge of the penalty area, Jake Hiscocks stepped up and arrowed a low drive straight past the flapping Tom Drewitt in the Welton goal.
Westbury nearly took the lead after 14 minutes, good work by Josh Ferguson to drive into the penalty area and shoot, the shot was parried straight to the feet of Kovacs, but a slight bobble meant he lifted his shot just over the bar. Westbury did take the lead on 36 minutes though, Steve Hulbert played a ball over the top to his brother, Rick. The lively Ricky Hulbert took the ball, turned his defender and unleashed a left-foot shot which was shinned by the keeper but only as far as Jamie Jordan on the edge of the area. Jordan passed the ball to his left where Hiscocks was waiting, and Hiscocks smashed the ball back into the crowded penalty area where Ricky Hulbert was waiting to apply the finishing touch to make it two-one.
Westbury came out and took control of the second half. It took until the 63rd minute for them to make their domination count, when that man, Jake Hiscocks, once again picked the ball up. This time it was on the wide left of the midfield, he drove forward and when he arrived level with the edge of the 18 yard box he cut inside and sent the ball low and hard across the edge of the box. Dan Kovacs had already made his move into the area but Ricky Hulbert was there, marshalled by two defenders. Ricky dummied the ball and let it run to Jamie Jordan who was arriving, unmarked, from the right wing. Jordan controlled the ball and stayed composed to finish inside the far post to make it 3-1.
