Soil mounds removed at Penleigh Park as precaution

Soil mounds at Penleigh Park have been removed as a precaution following the discovery of a small amount of asbestos-containing material earlier this year.

The material was found in June during an initial investigation into mounds created from excavated soil during the construction of a new pedestrian path.

The affected areas were secured with fencing and signage while specialist investigations and assessments were carried out. The subsequent investigation did not identify any further asbestos in the area, Westbury Town Council has confirmed.

The council said it also maintained a weekly inspection register and liaised with Wiltshire Council, the Health and Safety Executive and its health and safety consultant throughout the process.

Deborah Urch, Town Clerk at Westbury Town Council, said, “Following the specialist assessment, and despite no further asbestos being identified, the town council made the decision to remove the identified soil mounds from the site as a precaution and to provide reassurance to members of the public. The mounds have now been removed.”

The land left behind will be planted with wildflower seeds.

The mounds were originally created to add interest to the landscape and provide spaces for children and families to play and explore.

Deborah said, “It is with disappointment that these features will now be removed, but the Council’s priority is always to act in the best interests of the public and provide reassurance wherever possible.”

The council said it remains committed to improving Penleigh Park, with further tree planting, community garden works and plans to explore the renewal of the existing skatepark facility forming part of its future improvements.
