Seventeen strongman athletes took to the floor at Ironworx & The Athlete Centre, Westbury, last weekend to battle it out for the crown of Westbury Strongman 2018.
Director of Ironworx & The Athlete Centre Westbury, Lee Salter reports, “The day ran perfectly and we couldn’t have asked for more effort from all the athletes or the helpers and members who came together to make the day happen. It was a great set-up and having all the events inside created one amazing atmosphere.
“The event started with the car deadlift. This was a max rep even, so the athletes took a brutal opening to the day. Secondly we had the axle back squats at 185kg and 150kg respectively. This really tested some of the guys to the extent of even failing to make one clean rep.
“Next up was the axle clean and press. At this point the event really started to come to life, with many of the athletes hitting personal bests. The crowd certainly played their part and some of the successful lifts were without doubt inspired by the support. 140kg was the top lift to take the win.
“With two events remaining, the rankings were staring to unfold. It was clear to see the podium in both categories was not being handed out without a fight.
“The yoke walk was next up. This tested everyone’s core strength and stability to the maximum – 40 metres of huge compression was not exactly a walk in the park!
“Then to the finale – the medley. This was quite simply a race to victory. A 20m sled pull at 180kg and 220kg into five tyre flips and then three heavy sand bags loads.
“We finished with the top three in both categories receiving trophies and a top performer of the day taking away an amazing supplement and meal prep prize.
“We are looking forward to announcing our upcoming events soon and hope to help build the strongman and strongmen scene across Wiltshire.”
