Westbury entertained local rivals Calne in the latest West of England League Wiltshire Division, hoping to continue their winning run and make an effort to keep in touch with runaway league leaders Marshfield.
Westbury made two changes from last week’s way win against Royal Wootton Bassett, with Kayleb Gooderson and Michael Coles coming in for Daniel Gill and Andy Carroll who were unavailable.
Westbury won the toss and immediately decided to bat first. They opened with a new opening partnership of Richard Mills and the Westbury captain Michael Coles, due to the unavailable Daniel Gill. They made a bad start when the Calne opening bowler Jerron John dismissed Coles, bowled for 6 with the total at 9. Scott then joined Mills at the wicket and they played with quite a lot of confidence, but when the total reached 84, Calne broke through for the second time by having Scott out leg before off the bowling of Chowdhury for a good 27. Shortly after, Calne took two further wickets with the total at 102 Haggaty (3) and Hudson (0) the batsmen dismissed.
In the meantime, Mills completed his league 50 off 81 balls in 97 minutes. Evans then joined Mills at the wicket and the score increased, both batsmen playing with ease, and they took the total to 164. Then Calne broke through for the fifth time, having Evans stumped by Foster off the bowling of the Calne captain, Adams, for a good 19. Senneck then joined Mills at the wicket and with some lusty hitting and quick running, they took the total to 210. when Senneck was dismissed caught behind by Foster off the bowling of the Calne captain Adams for a rapid 31. During this, Mills completed his league Hundred. Lucas then came to the wicket and he hit a rapid 13 until he was bowled by Chowdhury and at the end of the allotted 50 overs, Westbury had accumulated 240 for 7 wickets, with Mills ending unbeaten on 117 off 137 balls in 172 minutes.
When Calne batted they made a bad start, with half the side out for 72, with all the Westbury bowlers containing the batsmen and it was only to a stubborn innings of John Ably, supported by Knight (22), that enabled Calne to 134 all out leaving Westbury victors by 107 runs. Clark Evans (3-25) had the best figures, ably supported by Alex Senneck (3-29) and Richard Oakley (2-25).
The next game (Saturday 20th July) is away against runaway league leaders Marshfield, with Westbury hoping to return home with a win and bring the league leaders back closer to the chasing pack.
