“Research shows a clear connection between tinnitus and hearing loss,” says Simon Swindells, audiologist and owner at South West Hearing Care. “In fact, the majority of people who experience tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss. While the two are not always directly linked, the underlying mechanism often involves damaged hair cells in the inner ear.
“These cells are responsible for transmitting sound signals to the brain, and when they are damaged, the brain may interpret this loss of input as sound, leading to the experience of tinnitus.
“Hearing loss can occur gradually due to age-related changes or as a result of prolonged exposure to loud noises. For those affected by both hearing loss and tinnitus, managing both conditions can feel overwhelming. However, advancements in hearing aids and other hearing technologies have provided significant relief for many. Hearing aids, for example, can restore auditory stimulation to the brain, helping it ’forget’ about tinnitus. They also help to reduce stress and additional hearing strain which is a trigger of tinnitus for many. A number of hearing aids also come with a range of tinnitus masking features as standard.
