St Mary’s Church, Upton Scudamore was filled with villagers and their families on Remembrance Sunday.
The service was conducted by Revd Jacques Desrosiers, accompanied by organist Bob Clitheroe and the village choir led by Claire Tanner. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Simon Purkiss, the Citation and Kohima Epitaph read by Major Peter Cogan. Richard Leigh recited an evocative poem by Kenny Martin. The service concluded with the National Anthem, sung with great pride by all present.
The respectful floral tributes, organised by Sue Mack and Si Leigh, included poppies hand-knitted by Cynthia Gladdis. These were complemented by the many Church kneelers bearing military badges.
Churchwarden Sue Spencer commented, “It is wonderful that so many people continue to honour and respect our forebears and contemporaries for the huge sacrifices they made, in two world wars and myriad other conflicts.”
