A chapel in Bratton has opened a weekly drop-in session offering residents a welcoming space to socialise, try activities and enjoy a break from everyday life.
Bratton Baptist Chapel holds Renew Bratton sessions every Monday afternoon, allowing residents to connect with others, try a new hobby, experience art therapy or play games.
Visitors can also enjoy tea, coffee and cake, while a separate quiet room is available for anyone who wants somewhere to sit, reflect, read, pray or talk through a problem.
Steve Desport, co-ordinator, said, “Whoever you are, whatever your mood: sad, happy, lonely, stressed or calm, this is a space for you to escape life’s hustle and bustle. Try some art therapy, hobby or craftwork. Play a table game or have a go at knitting or adult colouring.
“I am a great believer in people being able to meet up simply and connect. In my opinion, as a society, we are relying more and more on social media to communicate with each other. I believe that Renew Wellbeing is a great space for slowing down life’s busyness. Simple pleasures of sharing stories, being recognised and heard, acknowledging sadness and sharing laughter are all good for the human soul.”
The sessions run from 1.30pm to 3.30pm every Monday. There is no charge to attend, but a donation bowl is available for anyone wishing to contribute towards the cost of refreshments.
The chapel has been running a similar model for the past four years but has now joined Renew Wellbeing, a national scheme with similar sessions taking place across the country.
Reverend Graham Warmington, a co-ordinator, said the response to the sessions had been well received.
He said, “The response of those attending has been very positive, as they feel that it is a very friendly and safe space to come into. Many just love to sit and do an activity and chat as they do so.”
Various workshops will be held as the year progresses, including a craft session towards the end of the year.
