Visitors flock to annual vintage transport gathering

Westbury’s Transport and Vintage Gathering attracted over 500 visitors for one of its most successful weekends yet. 

Vintage cars, motorbikes and engines were on display at the event last month, which has been running for 32 years.

Amongst the exhibitors were Ray Davis from Bratton with his 1933 Raleigh car – one of only 15 ever made; Ed Eggers from Dilton Marsh with his 1961 E-Type Jaguar and Dennis Marshall from Westbury with his 1958 Bantam D5 motorcycle.

“It was a very successful weekend, one of our most successful,” said organiser Keith Miller. “All in all, we were very pleased. We had a very good turnout; in fact, we had a better turnout than I think we have ever had.

“We’re a small event, but we like to think that in terms of being friendly and relaxed, we’re as good as any.

“We had a particularly good turnout of motorbikes, which were very welcome indeed. We were very pleased with the number and type of stalls selling things, and we had a really interesting selection of vintage and classic cars, which was equally good.

“Most particularly, mind you, we could not possibly have had any better weather, it was really superb!”

Each year, an award is handed out to a local person who has supported the event.

“This year, we gave our plaque to Andy Pople, who has supported us loyally over quite a period of time,” said Keith. “And the great thing is that he’s a resident of Bratton, so two years on the run, we’ve given it to someone from Bratton!

“It’s very good that local people are taking an interest in what’s going on. It seems that we’re becoming a bit of an area for things that are happening in the countryside, and that’s really rather marvellous.”
