JANUARY is traditionally a time to make resolutions for the year ahead, but instead of resolving to change careers or get fit, local groups and charities are asking the people of Westbury to think of others and see if they could offer a helping hand.
Some of the organisations that need a helping hand this year include the Westbury Area Network (WAN) which runs the town’s food bank and community fridge, All Saints’ Church, the Westbury Library, the Westbury Youth Club, Westbury and District Link Scheme, Four Villages Link Scheme and Dorothy House.
As well as this, local organisations such as Westbury Rotary Club and Westbury Lions are all volunteers who hold events throughout the year to raise money for local good causes, and always welcome extra help.
Westbury Mayor, cllr Mike Sutton, is encouraging local people to spend some time as a volunteer this year.
“The vibrancy of small towns is dependent on the activities of local people who give their time freely to support projects within the community,” he said. “Whether it is with large organisations such as Rotary or Lions, to name just two, or working within smaller groups or even alone, the contribution individuals can make to the welfare of others can be very rewarding and of immense value to others. The time spent as a volunteer is a matter of personal choice and can be as little or as much as one can give, depending on personal circumstances.
“Although unitary authorities, such as Wiltshire Council, have paid councillors, the people who work within local communities such as Westbury, including councillors, are unpaid volunteers.
“As a society we are happier when working together for the benefit of others and helping fellow human beings of all ages and abilities, so whether it is one hour a week or a longer period, consider the joys of contributing to the common good within our vibrant community.”
The following groups and organisations are currently looking for volunteers; Westbury Area Network – volunteer opportunities; Library Friday tea and chat sessions helper; Youth Club trustees; Dorothy House – various roles; Westbury and District Link Scheme; Four Villages Link Scheme.
