Westbury entertained Winsley in the latest West of England League Wiltshire Division 2015 season hoping to continue their winning run.
This was the first time that Westbury had played Winsley for about five years. Westbury made two changes from the previous week’s win against Trowbridge with Kayleb Gooderson and Aiden Wicks coming in for Ben Whiting and Jake Andrews (9 who returned to the second eleven).
Westbury won the toss and decided to put Winsley into bat on a cool day. Westbury opened with the regular opening bowlers Carroll and Senneck and they put the Winsley batsman under a lot of pressure with very accurate bowling, in so much so that after 20 overs Winsley had only accumulated 38 for 4 wickets.
Then the Westbury captain Senneck brought on Oakley and Evans and they immediately broke the back of the innings when Oakley had a devastating bowling spell of 6 wickets for 32 ably supported by Evans (2-23). With these both bowling in tandem the Winsley innings subsided from 38 for 4 to 77 all out.
When Westbury batted they opened with Mills and MacDonald and they were in no trouble and duly completed the task of scoring 78 runs in just over 14 overs, with Mills unbeaten on 40 and MacDonald unbeaten on 29. This was a very good win against their local rivals.
With this win it lays down a marker for the rest of the season that Westbury will be there abouts at the end of the season.
Westbury can now look forward to next week’s game away at Marshfield with their confidence now sky high.
With the defeat of the league leaders Marlborough, Westbury are now just two points behind in second place.
