As a child, I well remember for myself and for my friends, the parental command – ‘do as you’re told!’ And on responding with a slightly rebellious ‘Why?’ receiving the really bad answer – ‘because I say so!’
The best parent is God, our Father – and His example is to give us a choice, with an explanation of the consequences of our decision – and always with a guide so we can do the right thing. “John 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I chose you …17 “These things I command you, that you love one another. Deuteronomy 30:19 I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;..”
From whatever starting point we may have in life, our choices guide our destiny – we cannot blame others for our own failure to think about consequences. How we respect and honour others is a sure route to honour, respect and success for our own lives. It is also a wonderful parenting guideline, and is so helpful in promoting family unity.
The United Kingdom has grown through the Union of Scotland with England and Wales in 1603, N. Ireland under the banner of the United Kingdom in 1707. In 300 years of Union, I am proud to be British and a Scot; our flag, the Union Jack, is world renowned, and the Union should not be treated cavalierly or dismissively. Many people gave their lives for our freedoms today – and the privilege of having a vote is a gift bought in blood which deserves utmost respect. How we vote in this coming election will have far-reaching consequences, so we all have responsibility to vote wisely and as Christians, prayerfully.
Our prayers are for a Government that will honour and respect democratic freedoms, freedom of speech, justice, and the defence of our peace and prosperity.
May Christmas bring togetherness through the love of God and an encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ our Peace, that no matter what difficulties we face, in Him we may be overcomers, and with grace, loving one another. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas.
