Westbury family business celebrates 60 years of success: Harper’s Curtains & Blinds marks a milestone anniversary

Harper’s Curtains & Blinds is celebrating a remarkable 60 years of business, marking six decades of providing high-quality, made-to-measure curtains and blinds to the local community.

The business was first established in 1964 by Edward Harper, who opened the company’s original shop on Westbury High Street, in which his daughter, Alex, later started working when she was a teenager. Edward then went on to open up a shop in Trowbridge in the 1990s and business thrived for many more years.

Still based in Westbury, the business is now run by Edward’s grandson, Sam, who intends to carry the family name well into the future.

“I don’t think there are many local family businesses that have been around this long,” said Sam. “I always have a real sense of pride when I say to people that we’ve been going for 60 years.

“My grandad built the business on high quality products with the customer service to match and right from the start, it earned a loyal following.

“When the shop in Trowbridge closed in 2013, my grandad had plans to retire. But he still had customers calling him asking for curtains, so he carried on but by offering home visits, and found that business took off again.”

Sam joined the family business in 2020, initially just to help his grandad with fitting but then went on to do it full-time after quickly realising he had a real love for the work, ensuring that Harper’s would continue for many years to come.

“We’ve found that customers really like that the business is still in the family and has passed down the generations,” he said. “I often have people ask if we are the same Harper’s that used to be in Trowbridge and say how great it is that we are still going!”

The family’s passion for their work has resulted in long-standing relationships with many customers, some spanning over 30, 40 years or more. “I went to a customer this week for some blinds, and they told me that their curtains were the same ones that we put up 18 years ago,” Sam recalls.

As Harper’s Curtains & Blinds celebrate its 60th anniversary, Alex and Sam are committed to continuing the family tradition of excellence. “Both my grandad and my mum are still involved in the business, and I’m hoping I can carry things on long into the future – and who knows, maybe pass it on to the next generation,” Sam said.
