Westbury Lions enthusiastically fund raise each year with a variety of events, from Street Fairs, their Donkey Derby, raffles and Santa’s Christmas Float.
All the money raised goes directly back into the local community with a large percentage going to the youth of Westbury through school donations, local community groups and direct individuals where requested.
In recent years their support for youth activities has included the Schools Concerts held at Matravers, which invites pupils from Westbury and the surrounding villages to demonstrate the musical talents of their pupils, as well as funding musical equipment purchases for school music departments.
It is their success at providing for the youth and the encouragement of arts activities that has recently won them the prestigious Lions District Youth Shield for 2014/15.
Westbury Lions work closely with Matravers school and were pleased to hand over the safe keeping of the shield to Dr. Riding and the future Leo club members led by Phillipa Lewis at the school on Monday 11th May.
The formation of the Leo’s club at Matravers provides a point of entry for pupils looking to become more involved in community projects and fundraising, while also opening up opportunities for participation in charitable projects at a national and international level with the guidance and support of the Lions Club of Westbury.
Matravers school has pride in its Leos club!
Phillipa Lewis, Assistant Head Matravers said, “We are so pleased at Matravers to be able to start the Leo’s club for Westbury and have been absolutely overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response from our students.
“We had our first meeting on Friday 22nd May to begin team building and plan out our future events in the community. It is a very exciting time for the school and Westbury; we all can’t wait to make a difference.”
