Through late summer, autumn, and early winter, our ladies at Westbury T.G have been busy honing their skills in our various clubs, and generally enjoying ourselves socially.

We all agreed the annual cream tea in August was a great success and very enjoyable, with delicious scones made by Marg, Janet and Wendy. The sales table managed by Val and the ever popular raffle organized by Edith. Janet Wakefield was thanked for hosting the event in her garden.

October 10th saw 7 of us visiting Dents glove factory in Warminster where we were given a tour of the building including the museum which contained many interesting artifacts, among them the Dents coronation glove for Queen Elizabeth 11. Later, in the boardroom we listened to a very informative talk about the history of Dents and shown samples of leather and the techniques used to make the various styles of gloves.

The following week we gathered in the Crown Inn for a competitive game of skittles. The winner being Mary Potten.  The winner of the wooden  spoon was  Mary? Having worked up an appetite we settled down to a well-earned  ploughman’s lunch and a lot of chat.

Our speakers have proved to be very interesting. Margaret Hiscox from Wiltshire Scrapstore, a charity based in Lacock which recycles surplus components and materials from factories and businesses, recreating articles and products in a workshop environment. The Scrapstore works with the general public but largely with schools. After the talk we were each given our individual pack of coloured cards and instructed how to make a greetings card. A fun evening at which we welcomed a visitor.

Our other speaker Mrs. Helen Holden, a retired dental surgeon who told us how she is involved with the charity World Vision, an organization working in 100 countries. Helen’s role is to sponsor a child in Africa by way of monthly payments. All monies received by the charity are used for the welfare of the children to raise them out of poverty, give them access to clean water, schooling and generally improve the quality of their lives. Helen’s talk was accompanied by colour slides of the visit she and her husband made to meet  and interact with the children and importantly to meet her own sponsored child.  Again we welcomed another visitor to our meeting. Also at this October meeting we enjoyed apple pies made by Marg and Wendy.

The book club and scrabble group continue to enjoy monthly get-togethers and likewise the craft group are planning their next project -knitting bonnets for the premature babies in the RUH.

Our finances are looking healthy thanks to a recent  generous grant from Westbury Town Council for which we are very grateful. Thank you. We are currently raising funds for a memorial to our founder member, treasurer/committee member for 48 years Miss Margaret Sanders, who recently, sadly died. The memorial is to be a tree planted in  Dilton Marsh churchyard.

Tickets have been received for the National TG carol service in Wells Cathedral.  We look foreward to welcoming  ladies of Trowbridge TG joining us on the coach for the service.

Our group meets on the 4th Thursday of each month at Grassacres Hall 7.30pm. Any ladies in Westbury and surrounding villages interested, come along and give us a try. You will receive a warm welcome (and tea and biscuit!!)  or  ring Wendy  on 01225 764515.
