Westbury’s season ended with a second defeat in nine days to Barnstaple Town. As with the result in Devon they certainly didn’t deserve to lose and it was only a moment of magic by Barnstaple’s Billy Tucker that gave them some breathing space..
On a very warm afternoon United had the first chance on 10 minutes when Charlie Walton battled past Kieron Jewell and forced Jimmy Thorne into a fine save.
Town got on top of the play for a large part of the half without creating many opportunities; Tucker fired a 30 yarder over the bar before trying another long range half volley which dipped onto the roof of the net. Their opening goal came on 26 when a rapid move led to Jed Harper-Penman shooting from the edge of the box which forced Rob Brown into a good low save but Tucker was on hand to tap in the rebound. Tucker continued his excellent display with a wonder goal just after half time ; receiving the ball fully 50 yards from goal he hit a stunning effort that flew into the net to make it 0-2!
Westbury’s best spell of the afternoon led to them pulling a goal back from the penalty spot on 68; Ally Bradley burst forward from defence and sent Mark Young running into the box where he was fouled by Jewell; the penalty was awarded, Jewell was shown a straight red card and Alex Shaftoe powered the kick past Thorne.
Shaftoe then had a wonderful chance to equalise, but after being released by Walton his finish flew narrowly over the bar. Then with United committing men into attack Tucker turned provider by crossing to Ryan Turner who headed the final goal with time running out.
