Westbury Utd 1-2 Radstock Town – Toolstation Div. One, Saturday 23rd April

United came within a whisker of snatching an unlikely draw with a late comeback at Meadow Lane. 

For the most part this had been a dull typical end of season encounter, however with Matty Mantay superb again in midfield, Westbury’s work rate and determination could not be faulted. Despite that Radstock dominated possession and chances for much of the 1st half with Craig Wilson, Rico Sobers, Josh Whitcombe and Simon Millard all failing to hit the target. When the hosts got some passing going the ball failed to stick up front and the score remained goalless at half time.

Town opened the scoring on 51 minutes when Wilson’s shot was saved by Charlie Heydon and the ball rebounded to Sobers who put it into the net.

After a protracted spell of poor football Sobers repaid the favour by setting up Wilson for the 2nd goal on 78 and it seemed that Radstock would comfortably see out the game.

However Westbury went on all out attack and with Ben Forester a threat as well as Dan Moore digging deep despite struggling for fitness, substitute Chris Gait got on the end of Jake Stephenson’s lofted ball to loop a header in and set up an exciting last 10 minutes.

The game became stretched for the first time and Heydon saved well when Sam Gregory shot from 20 yards, Zayn Alime’s set piece was headed over by Stephenson and then Gait appeared to be fouled but no penalty was given. The final chance fell to the hosts deep in injury time but Stephenson’s well struck 20 yard free kick flew inches over the bar.
